Your Tax Identification Number (TIN) is the key to NRS e-invoicing compliance. Learn how to validate your TIN, fix common errors, and avoid invoice rejection before the July 2026 deadline.

Your Tax Identification Number (TIN) is the single most important piece of data for NRS e-invoicing. If your TIN is invalid, expired, or incorrectly formatted, every invoice you generate will be rejected by the NRS system. Here’s how to check and fix it before it costs you money.

What Is a TIN and Why Does It Matter?

A TIN is an 11-digit unique identifier issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), now under the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). It is required on every tax invoice issued by a registered business in Nigeria.

Without a valid TIN:

  • Your invoices will fail NRS validation
  • You cannot claim input VAT credits
  • Your Tax Clearance Certificate may be suspended
  • Clients will refuse to do business with you

How to Validate Your TIN

There are three ways to validate your TIN:

1. Use Our Free TIN Validation Tool

Our invoice editor has a built-in TIN validator that checks your TIN in real-time. Simply enter your 11-digit TIN in the business details section, and we’ll instantly verify it against the NRS database.

2. Check via the FIRS e-Portal

Log into the FIRS e-Registration portal and navigate to “TIN Verification.” Enter your TIN and the system will confirm its status.

3. Visit a Tax Office

If you suspect your TIN is inactive or incorrect, visit the nearest FIRS tax office with your CAC certificate and government-issued ID.

Common TIN Errors That Get Invoices Rejected

Error 1: Wrong Number of Digits

A valid Nigerian TIN is exactly 11 digits. Not 10, not 12. If you enter fewer or more digits, the NRS system will reject it immediately.

Error 2: Using a Personal TIN for Business

Individual TINs and business TINs are different. If you registered as a sole proprietor, your personal TIN may work for small transactions, but B2B invoices require the business TIN linked to your CAC registration.

Error 3: Inactive or Suspended TIN

A TIN can become inactive if:

  • You haven’t filed returns in over 12 months
  • Your business registration has lapsed
  • There’s a compliance hold on your account

To reactivate, file your outstanding returns and clear any penalties.

Error 4: TIN Not Linked to CAC Number

The NRS cross-references your TIN with your CAC registration number. If they don’t match in the system, your invoices will be flagged as non-compliant. Visit FIRS to link them.

What Happens If Your TIN Fails Validation?

If you issue an invoice with an invalid TIN:

  • The invoice is marked as “Failed” in the NRS system
  • The buyer cannot claim input VAT on the transaction
  • Both parties face compliance penalties
  • Your compliance score drops, affecting future transactions

How InvoiceApp Helps

InvoiceApp.ng validates your TIN every time you create an invoice. If there’s an issue, we flag it before you send the invoice — so you never send a non-compliant document to a client.

Our system also:

  • Auto-fills your CAC number from your TIN
  • Checks if the buyer’s TIN is valid before sending
  • Calculates VAT and WHT based on your TIN status
  • Generates QR codes that link to your verified TIN
